VIENNA – Ticket prices on Vienna’s public transport network are set to rise again at the beginning of 2027, with operator Wiener Linien preparing another fare adjustment linked to inflation. The extent of the increase has not yet been determined, with details expected to be announced later this autumn.

The annual adjustment is based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which increased by 3.2 percent between August 2025 and August 2026, according to Statistics Austria. While the inflation figure provides the framework for the revision, Wiener Linien has not yet confirmed how much individual ticket products will cost under the new tariff structure.

The planned increase follows a policy introduced in 2026, when Wiener Linien raised ticket prices for the first time since 2012. At the time, the operator announced that fares would be indexed annually in line with inflation, a practice already used by both the Eastern Region Transport Association (VOR) and Austria’s national railway operator ÖBB.

Wiener Linien said the exact level of the 2027 fare increase will be disclosed in the autumn.

In the meantime, speculation about possible new prices has emerged online. Posts on the social media platform Reddit have suggested increases ranging from €0.10 to €1.10 depending on the ticket type. The figures were attributed to an alleged “partner of Wiener Linien”, but no official confirmation has been provided.

The transport operator declined to comment on the circulating figures and urged passengers to wait for the official announcement.

Other transport providers have already confirmed fare changes. ÖBB plans to increase ticket prices by around 3.5 percent when its new timetable comes into effect on 13 December 2026. VOR has also implemented price adjustments for a number of ticket products in recent months, with changes introduced in July and September.

The upcoming Wiener Linien decision will affect one of Europe’s most heavily used urban transport systems, serving millions of passengers each year across Vienna’s metro, tram and bus networks.
